Chinese Steamed Radish



Chinese Steamed Radish is a light, healthy, and comforting dish that highlights the natural sweetness of radish. Steaming preserves its nutrients and delicate flavor, making this dish popular in home cooking, especially during colder seasons.


Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 large Chinese white radish (daikon), about 600–800 g

  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 small piece of ginger, minced

Seasonings

  • 1 tbsp light soy sauce

  • 1 tsp oyster sauce (optional)

  • 1 tsp sesame oil

  • ½ tsp salt (adjust to taste)

  • ½ tsp sugar (optional, to enhance sweetness)

  • 1 tbsp cooking oil

Garnish (Optional)


Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Radish

  1. Peel the radish and cut it into thick slices or long sticks.

  2. Rinse well and drain.

  3. Lightly sprinkle with salt and let it sit for 5–10 minutes to release excess moisture, then drain.


Step 2: Arrange for Steaming

  1. Place the radish evenly on a heatproof plate.

  2. Spread minced garlic and ginger over the radish.

  3. Drizzle with cooking oil.


Step 3: Steam the Radish

  1. Bring water to a boil in a steamer.

  2. Place the plate inside and steam over medium heat for 12–15 minutes, until the radish becomes tender and translucent.


Step 4: Season

  1. Remove the plate carefully.

  2. Pour light soy sauce and oyster sauce evenly over the steamed radish.

  3. Drizzle with sesame oil and sprinkle sugar if using.


Step 5: Garnish and Serve

  1. Top with chopped scallions or cilantro.

  2. Serve hot as a light side dish or a healthy main accompaniment.


Tips for Best Flavor

  • Daikon radish works best due to its sweetness and low bitterness.

  • Do not over-steam; overcooking can make the radish watery.

  • Adding dried shrimp or goji berries gives the dish a deeper, traditional flavor.


Serving Suggestions

Serve with steamed rice, congee, or as a side dish alongside meat or seafood dishes. It’s also great for a light vegetarian meal.
